33 11 001 Replacing Front Axle Carrier

Special Tools Required:
- 00 2 040
- 33 3 274
- 33 4 221
- 33 4 226


Important!
Adhere to the utmost cleanliness. Do not allow any dirt to enter the hydraulic system.
Seal off pipe connections with plugs.

Necessary Preliminary Tasks:
- Draw off and dispose of hydraulic fluid from fluid reservoir. Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations
- Remove front wheels
- Secure engine in installation position
- Remove underbody protective plate
- Remove reinforcement plate
- Remove lower steering spindle from power steering gear
- Remove tie rod end from swivel bearing
- Remove control arm from front axle carrier
- Remove tension struts from front axle carrier
- Remove engine mount from front axle carrier






Unfasten screws.

Installation of screws:
Replace self-locking nuts.

Warning!
Danger of injury!
Failure to comply with the following instructions may result in the vehicle slipping off the lifting platform and critically injuring other persons.

When supporting components, make sure that:
- the vehicle can no longer be raised or lowered
- the vehicle does not lift off the locating plates on the lifting platform






Insert special tools 33 4 226 and 33 4 221 into corresponding mountings of special tool 00 2 040.

Align special tool 00 2 040 to front axle carrier.

If necessary, lower special tool 33 3 274

Support front axle carrier by raising special tool 00 2 040.

Support front axle carrier with workshop jack.






Unfasten screws.

Installation of screws:
Check threads for damage; if necessary repair with Helicoil thread inserts.

Lower workshop jack until banjo bolts on power steering gear are accessible.

Release banjo bolts.

Remove front axle carrier with power steering gear.






Installation of banjo bolts:
Replace sealing rings (D).


After Installation:
- Fill and bleed hydraulic system
- Check pipe connections for leaks
- Check distance between engin carrier and stem of double joint!
- Perform chassis alignment check
- Carry out steering angle sensor adjustment
