Replacing Both ITS Head Airbag (Model Fitted)
Removing And Installing/Replacing Left Or Right ITS Head Airbag (Model Fitted With Sliding/Tilting Sunroof)
WARNING:
Observe safety regulations for handling airbag modules and pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners, refer to MG 72.
Incorrect handling can activate airbag and cause injury.
CAUTION:
The ITS head airbag can be damaged by sharp edges when it is triggered.
This limits the functionality of the ITS head airbag or, in extreme cases, results in its failure.
If necessary, replace damaged covers and rectify cause of damage.
Recycling:
An ITS head airbag that has not triggered must be disposed of and replaced after removal because the retaining clips cannot be released without damage.
Remove headliner.
Remove trim panel for instrument panel.
If head airbag is fitted in rear compartment (C-pillar airbag), remove and install/replace head airbag in rear compartment on left or right, refer to 72 12 ...
Follow instructions for unlocking airbag plug connections.
Disconnect plug connection (1) on gas generator (2) for ITS head airbag.
Unscrew nuts (3).
Installation:
Tightening torque.

M6 nut 4 Nm
Remove gas generator (2) for ITS head airbag.
Release screw (1).
Installation:
Tightening torque.
14AZ Bracket of ITS head airbag on body
E46E53
Metal screw 4 Nm
Release retaining screw (1) on A-pillar.
Retaining screw remains on anchor fitting.
Installation:
Tightening torque.
4AZ ITS head airbag to body (end fitting)
E53 11 Nm
Do not release retaining screw (1) on rear roof frame.
Retaining screw remains on anchor fitting.
Installation:
Tightening torque.

Installation summary, anchor fittings:
1. Anchor fitting of ITS head airbag
2. Retaining disk
3. Retaining screw
CAUTION: The retaining clips cannot be released without damage. After removal, the ITS head airbag must be disposed of and replaced.
Unclip retaining clips (1) together with ITS head airbag (2) on A-pillar.
Unclip retaining clips (1) together with ITS head airbag (2) on roof frame.
Installation:
Ensure clips are correctly positioned on protective panel (1).
Clip in protective panel (1) together with ITS head airbag (2) at front and rear on roof frame (3).
