Adjusting Front Axle (With KDS) (Toe-In and Camber)
Caution:
After axle alignment, it is necessary to carry out a "steering angle adjustment" with the BMW diagnostic system.
Adjusting camber:
A change in camber always signifies a toe-in change. The camber must therefore be adjusted first.
Changes in axle geometry caused by accidents must under no circumstances be rectified by camber adjustment.
On right side, detach reservoir for windshield washer system if necessary.
Detach cap from wheel arch.
Remove centering pin (1) with Allen key -> this pin is no longer needed.
Remove dirt in area of support bearing in wheel arch from below with compressed air.
Slacken nut (2) approx. 1 1/2 turns.
Insert special tool 32 3 143/144 into opening of wheel arch and over nuts.
Replace nuts (3) and screw on but do not tighten down fully.
Adjust camber to specified value by turning nut in special tool.
Max. possible change in camber ± 18°.
Tighten down nuts (3).
Tightening torque:
- Spring strut mount to wheel house
- Flanged hexagon nut 18 mm 24 Nm
- Flanged hexagon nut 21 Nm 34 Nm
Remove special tool. Replace and tighten down nut (2). Tightening torque:
- Spring strut mount to wheel house
- Flanged hexagon nut 18 mm 24 Nm
- Flanged hexagon nut 21 Nm 34 Nm
Adjusting toe-in/toe-differential angle:
Move wheels and steering gear to straight-ahead position.
Markings on cap (1) and on housing (2) must be aligned.
Loosen lock nut (1) on track rod.
Adjust wheel toe-in to specified value by turning tie rod at hexagon head (2).
Installation:
- Make sure steering packing is not turned. Tighten lock nut (1).
Tightening torque:
- Tie Rod Clamping Nut: 51 Nm
