Body - Erratic Rear Hatch Operation

SUBJECT
Soft Close Hatch (SCA) Diagnostic

MODEL
E53 (X5) Model Year 2004 or newer.

SITUATION

Some customers may experience the following:

1. The upper hatch lights are on when the hatch is closed.

2. The upper hatch opens by itself.

3. The upper hatch will not soft close (SCA function inactivate).

CORRECTION

Depending on the complaint, follow the diagnostic procedure.

PROCEDURE

1. The upper hatch lights are on when the hatch is closed.

^ Check the emergency cable tension - there should not be any tension.

^ Check wiring harness connection to the SCA motor.

^ Check hatch adjustment by following SI B41 50 99.

2. The upper hatch opens by itself

^ Check the emergency cable tension - there should not be any tension.

^ Check hatch adjustment by following SI B41 50 99.

3. The upper hatch will not soft close (SCA function inactive).

^ Check the emergency cable tension - there should not be any tension.

^ Check wiring harness connection to the SCA motor.

^ The SCA motor may have lost its initialization. To reinitialize:

^ Close the hatch.

^ Press the release button on the hatch for approximately one second.

Note
If the SCA function still does not work, it may be necessary to perform a hard reset on the General Module. To do this, remove fuse # 13, then fuse # 14, wait 10 seconds and then replace fuse # 14, then fuse # 13. Then perform the initialization procedure noted on step 3 above.
