SUBJECT
CD53 Radio: Ticking or Hissing Noise from Speakers
MODEL
E46 (3 Series) from 3/2003 to 3/2004
E39 (5 Series) from 3/2003 on without DSP
E53 (X5) from 4/2003 to 9/2003 without DSP
SITUATION
The customer complains that with the engine on and radio off, the speakers emit a light ticking or hissing noise. This only affects vehicles with the BMW Assist TCU (Telematics Control Unit) or the BMW ULF (Universal Bluetooth Hands-Free System) module installed.
CAUSE
The radio has insufficient noise filtering.
CORRECTION
If the noise disappears when disconnecting the 26-pin blue audio jumper plug, follow the procedure as outlined below.
PROCEDURE
E53 (X5)
E39 (5 Series)
1. Install the inline filter (P/N 61 12 6 942 027) at connector X400 (12-pin natural), located on the left side of the luggage compartment.
E46 (3 Series)
Install the inline filter (P/N 61 12 6 941 649) into the audio wiring harness at the radio.
1. Remove the radio and disconnect the black 10-pin connector.
2. After the 10-pin connector has been removed from the radio, remove the protective cover from the connector.
3. Remove the black wire (1) from pin location 8.
4. Remove the yellow wire (2) from pin location 3.
5. Take the black wire removed from the radio 10-pin connector pin location 8 and insert into pin location 2 of the black 3-pin (4) connector (supplied with filter kit P/N 61 12 6 941).
6. Take the yellow wire removed from the radio 10-pin connector pin location 3 and insert into pin location 1 of the black 3-pin (4) connector.
7. Connect both black 3-pin connectors (3) and (4) together.
8. Insert the yellow/red (1) wire from the filter into pin location 3 of the black 10-pin radio connector.
9. Insert the yellow/brown (2) wire from the filter into pin location 8 of the black 10-pin radio connector.
10. Reinstall the black 10-pin radio connector.
11. Reinstall the radio and retest the system.
