SUBJECT
Trunk Lid Grip Water Ingress

MODEL
E53 (X5)

SITUATION

The customer may complain of intermittent trunk lid (lift gate or rear hatch) unlocking operations:

^ The trunk lid cannot be opened from the outside using the push button, but it can still be opened remotely by using the key or from the inside by using the button in the interior compartment.

^ The trunk lid may unlock when the driver switches the driving lights on.

CAUSE

Water leaks into the trunk lid grip. The complaint may occur on an intermittent basis because operation may return to normal when the water dries out.

CORRECTION

In case of a customer complaint, check for water leaks and replace the trunk lid grip.

PROCEDURE

1. Check for water leaks from these possible areas:

^ Poor application of rear window bonding adhesive.

^ Loose wire harness grommets between trunk lid and the body.

^ Defective seal on the rear wiper drive assembly.

^ Defective trunk lid grip gasket.

2. Do not replace the servo lock.

3. Replace the trunk lid grip and gasket per Repair Instructions RA 51 13 403

4. Apply contact grease around the electrical connector to prevent future water ingress.
