SUBJECT
Water Ingress into the Sides of the Luggage Compartment

MODEL
E53 (X5)

SITUATION
Water may be found in either of the rear side compartments (the battery box or electrical components area). The customer complaint is usually related to electrical failures, such as audio-related complaints.

CAUSE
A void in the seam sealer behind the rear bumper cover allows water to enter the side compartments.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the rear bumper cover per Repair Instruction RA 51 12 000.

2. Inspect the areas under the bumper cover where the seam sealer is present, or where sheet metal panels are joined.

3. If any voids are identified, they should be sealed with a commercially available seam sealer.

4. If no voids are identified, continue with water testing and troubleshooting of the leak. A few examples of items to inspect are:

^ Rear sunroof drains for obstructions

^ Poorly sealed tail lamps

^ Incorrectly seated air extractors

^ Poorly sealed roof rail mounts
