SUBJECT
Power Lock(s), Window(s), Mirror(s) Inop

MODEL
E53 (X5)

SITUATION

Driver or passenger side power door lock(s), window(s), mirror(s) inoperative, "door ajar" warning displayed on the instrument Cluster.

CAUSE

A break in the seal of the upper front door hinge causes water ingress, which results in corrosion of the "A" pillar electrical connector. Some, or all of the above conditions may occur.

CORRECTION

On a customer complaint basis, and to reduce troubleshooting time, check the electrical connector (X256 or X257) in the "A" pillar for evidence of corrosion.

If corrosion is present, remove the door from the vehicle at the hinge pins (refer to repair instruction 41 51 081) and place it aside to prevent any damage. Clean the connector housing, and replace corroded terminals as necessary.

To correct the leakage, lightly scuff the paint surface at the joint between the hinges and the body with a 3M Scotch-Brite(R) Ultra Fine (gray) pad (3M number 07448). Apply a bead of 3M Flexiclear(R) seam sealer (3M number 08405) around the perimeter of the hinges at the body joint, and smooth into place.

Reinstall the door.
