SUBJECT
Various Electrical Faults Associated with Steering Column Harness

MODEL
E53 (X5)

SITUATION
The customer may complain of faults associated with the steering column switches, MFL buttons, or airbag warning lamp (Driver's airbag circuit)

CAUSE
Steering column harness rubbing on sharp metal edge

PROCEDURE
Remove the trim panel below the steering wheel and check steering column harness. Repair any damaged wires as necessary.

NOTE:
For airbag circuit repairs, please refer to safety instructions in Repair Operation 61 00 ...

Use wire ties to reroute the wiring harness in order to prevent recurrence. Be sure to allow sufficient movement for the telescoping steering column.
