SUBJECT
Various Problems Associated with Tailgate Wiring Harness

MODEL
E53 (X5) to July 2004

SITUATION
The customer may complain of problems with any of the electrical functions associated with the tailgate- remotes/lights/rear wiper/radio reception/GPS/lock actuation/rear window heating.

CAUSE
Harness shorting on the metal clips that hold the inner plastic trim pieces for the rear lid

PROCEDURE
Check the harness at the top right corner of the rear tailgate, and reinsulate as necessary. Typically, the metal clip that retains the tailgate interior panel, rubs against the harness close to the point where the harness enters the tailgate.
