SUBJECT
Crankcase Vent Valves
MODEL
E53 X5, E60 Series, and E65/E66 7 Series with N62 Engine
SITUATION
Certain vehicles equipped with the N62 engine may experience whistling noises from the engine, have the service engine soon light illuminated, and/or mixture faults stored in the DME. The problem can be caused by leaking diaphragm in either or both of the crankcase vent valves located on the valve covers.
CORRECTION
Should diagnosis reveal this to be the cause of the complaint, replace both valves.
PROCEDURE
Remove the 4 screws securing the acoustic cover (1) to the engine. Remove towards the front.
Remove the trim covers from both valve covers to expose the crankcase vent valves (1). Using a pick, release the six clips securing the vent valve.
Remove the vent valve cover (1), diaphragm (2), and spring (3). The replacement repair kit consists of all three parts. Install in the reverse order ensuring that the cover is in the correct position (see illustration) and that all six clips are securely and positively engaged.
