SUBJECT
Service Action: Check Rear Hatch Latch

MODEL
X5

SITUATION

The soft-close rear hatch latch used in early October 2003 production may have an internal electrical fault that can cause the latch to fail in either the closed or open position. BMW is conducting a Service Action to check the production date of the latch on potentially affected vehicles and replace any latches produced within a certain date range.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves X5 vehicles which were produced from 10/1/03-10/8/03.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

[NEW] A letter (sample included) will be mailed to all customers that have not had the procedure performed on their vehicle.

PROCEDURE

Remove the lower trim on the rear hatch per Repair Instructions, 51 49 050.

Check the production date which is engraved in the area indicated in the illustration. This area is somewhat hidden behind the wiper motor.

The date code is a six digit number in YYMMDD order (example: 030823 = August 23, 2003). If the date code is between 030823 and 030911 (Aug. 23-Sept. 11, 2003), or if there is no date code on the latch, the latch must be replaced per Repair Instructions 51 24 110.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 384. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-245) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 384 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
