SUBJECT
With Key Removed, Kombi Shows Shift Indicator in Drive, Kombi Still Powered

MODEL
E39 (5 Series), E53 (X5)

SITUATION
Typical symptoms, with the key removed from the vehicle are:

^ The shift indicator shows the vehicle in Drive even though the vehicle is in Park

^ The Instrument Cluster remains powered up

^ The brake lights remain on.

CAUSE

Under investigation.

[NEW] Thank you to all who have returned relays for special examination. While our testing has revealed no specific problem with any of the returned relays, we are continuing to investigate the problem, and looking at other possible causes.

[NEW] PROCEDURE
In case of a customer complaint, do not replace any parts. If the problem is currently present, perform a battery reset.
