Wheel Hub: Service and Repair
31 21 180 Replacing bearings (wheel hub) for front wheelSpecial tools required:

Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Remove brake disk.
^ Remove ABS pulse generator.
1. Wheel hub
2. Collar nut
3. Stub shaft
4. Dust cap
5. Sealing cap
Remove sealing cap with screwdriver or chisel.
Release collar nut with cross-cut chisel and remove with special tool 31 2 080.
Remove bearing assembly with special tools 31 2 116 / 33 4 201 /33 4 202/33 4 203 and wheel studs (1).
Important: Do not use a bearing unit again once it has been removed!
If necessary, pull inner bearing race off axle stub.
Attach special tool 33 4 406/33 4 401 to bearing inner race and tension until special tool can still just be turned.
Withdraw inner bearing race with special tool 33 4 402.
Detach bearing inner race without special tool 33 4 406:
If inside bearing inner ring remains on stub axle after pulling off bearing unit, unscrew guard plate.
If necessary, bend back dust guard plate so that guard plate can be removed.
Bend back dust guard plate (1). Fit pulling-off claws of special tool 00 7 500 behind bearing inner race (2). Pull off bearing inner race with special tool 00 7 500 and 312 106.
Note: Special tool 00 7 500 with fitted pull-off claws.
Installation: If applicable, install guard plate.
Fit new dust guard plate (2).
Screw in guide sleeve (1) of special tool 31 2 110 for entire length of threads and pull on new bearing unit.
Warning: Lock collar nut. Caulk on flat area in axle stub.
Replace sealing cap.
Coat edge (mounting face to wheel hub) over entire extent with sealing compound, refer to BMW Parts Service, and fit sealing cap.
