SUBJECT
Rattling Noise from the Rear of the Door Panel

MODEL
E85, E86 (Z4 Roadster and Coupe) produced up to May 2007

SITUATION
The customer may hear a rattling noise coming from the rear area of one or both door panels while driving over rough surfaces.

CAUSE
Unfavorable tolerances may allow the back side of the door panel to contact the door's inner sheet metal in the area of the door latch.

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis, install a bump stop (PN 51 41 9 159 633) to the specified area of the door's inner sheet metal.

This corrective action has been in place in production from May 2007.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the door panel from the side which the rattle was heard per repair instruction RA 51 41 000.





2. Install a bump stop (1) P/N 51 41 9 159 633 onto the door just between the latch and the lock rod as shown.

3. Re-install the door panel and verify that the rattling noise has been eliminated.

4. If the rattle was heard from both door panels, repeat this process for the opposite side.
