SUBJECT
Reversed Connection on Replacement Hydraulic Unit

MODEL
E85 (Z4) produced up to 5/2006

SITUATION
The arrangement of the hydraulic lines on the hydraulic unit changed as of 5/2006. As a result, if the hydraulic unit is replaced on a vehicle built prior to 5/2006, the electrical connections must be reversed in order for the soft top to operate correctly.

CAUSE
The incorporation of a hydraulic stowage latch to the convertible top

CORRECTION
Reverse the electrical connections when they are connected to the hydraulic unit.

PROCEDURE

1. Replace the hydraulic unit per repair instruction RA 54 34 005.

2. When making the connections on the new hydraulic unit, observe the following recommendations:

a. The hydraulic line connection locations on the new pump are reversed when compared with the old pump. Secure the hydraulic lines in the correct location by matching up the numbered hydraulic lines with the numbers embossed on the pump.

b. When making the electrical connections on the pump, secure the black-blue wire to the positive terminal, denoted by a red marking adjacent to the connector on the pump. Secure the black-green wire to the negative terminal.

3. Road test the car with the soft top in the fully open position and listen for rattles.

4. If any rattles are heard from the center area of the soft top, remove the soft top stowage latch per repair instruction RA 54 31 165.
