Technical Service
SUBJECT:
Knocking Noise from the Seat Frame
MODEL:
E85, E86 (Z4 Roadster and Coupe) produced up to 12/2006 and equipped with the M Sport Seat (option SA711)
SITUATION
A knocking noise may be heard from the bottom of one or both of the seats when the passenger's weight is shifted in the seat.
CAUSE
The hooks on the seat frame may not have been lubricated during assembly. As a result, a slip-stick effect occurs due to friction between the seat frame hooks and the seat cushion brackets.
CORRECTION
Apply a lubricant to the two hooks on the seat frame.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the affected seat per Repair Instruction RA 52 15 000.
2. On a clean surface, lay the seat on its back and identify the 2 points (1) where the seat cushion secures to the seat frame.
3. On the outboard side of the seat, apply grease or spray lubricant to the hook (1) which is secured to the bracket (2) on the side of the seat cushion.
4. Identify and lubricate the equivalent mounting hook and bracket (1) on the opposite (inboard) side of the seat. This fastening point is located on the seat frame, between seat motors (2) and (3).
