SUBJECT
Passenger Airbag Status Lamp Goes ON/OFF During Driving

Model

SITUATION

The customer complains that with a person in the front passenger seat, the passenger airbag status lamp may illuminate or intermittently go on/off while driving. No airbag faults are stored.

CAUSE

The primary purpose of the passenger seat occupancy mat is to detect a child up to an age of approximately one-year who is placed in an appropriate child seat. As a result, while the system accurately detects a child up to one year of age, it may not recognize an adult occupant if that person moves into certain positions in the seat (for example to sit more on the side of the seat).

Note:
Seat covers, seat cushion padding, ball mats etc., interfere with the operation of the passenger detection system, and therefore must not be installed unless recommended by BMW.

CORRECTION

In case of customer complaint:

a. For E60/E65/E66 with Sport Seats or Comfort Seats and E90, recode the 0C3 seat occupancy mat - see "PROCEDURE" below. The new coding improves recognition.

b. For E83, replace the seat mat with new part with revised coding - see Parts Information below.

c. For E60/E65 with Base seats and E85, no coding repair is currently available. Check that the functionality of the Passenger Airbag Status Lamp (lamp goes "off" with adult in passenger seat). Do not replace parts unless a fault is detected. If the lamp illuminates while driving but no fault is detected, it is recommended the passenger change seating position (the manner in which the person is seated and the weight distributed) so that the light goes off. You should inform the customer/passenger that if the air bag light is on, the air bag is not activated.

PROCEDURE

For E60/E65/E66 with Sport Seats or Comfort Seats and E90 only, use special repair cable 52 1 010 to recode the 0C3 seat occupancy mat (do not replace parts):
