SUBJECT

MODEL
[E85] E85 (Z4)with fully automatic top

SITUATION
[NEW]Some customers may complain that in colder ambient temperatures the convertible top will not properly latch in the stowed position. This may lead to complaints of a raffle noise while the top is in the stowed position.

This illustration shows where the top may not latch into the stowed position.

[NEW]CORRECTION

1. Adjust the latch bracket assembly (1):

a. Remove the rear storage box panel per Repair Instruction 51 16 235.

b. Loosen the bolts (2) holding down the latch bracket assembly.

c. Lower the top by using the main switch in the Instrument Panel so that the top hooks (3) are properly engaged into the latch bracket (4).

d. Repeat step c) to ensure proper stowing operation.

e. Torque the bolts (2) to 8 Nm.

2. Adjust the balance links forward.
Note:
Left side balance link shown in the illustrations.

a. Lower the convertible top into the stowed position.

b. Remove the oval shaped covers (1) from the balance links on both sides of the vehicle to expose the four T-40 Torx bolts.

c. Place a mark on both balance links (1) to indicate the center of the bolts (as indicated by the black arrows). Use these marks to verify that the balance link (1) has been moved forward after the adjustment has been made.

d. Loosen, but do not remove, the four T-40 Torx bolts (2) on both sides of the vehicle.

e. With the help of another person, slide the left and right side balance links (1) toward the front of the vehicle as far as possible.

^ Note:
The balance links (1) may only move approximately 2 or 3 mm forward.

f. While holding the balance links (1) forward, torque the T-40 Torx bolts (2) to 20 Nm.

g. Verify convertible top operation.
