SUBJECT
Wind Noise from the Hardtop

MODEL
E85 (Z4 Roadster) produced up to 8/2004 and fitted with the hardtop accessory

SITUATION
A wind noise may be heard from the front of the hardtop. The intensity of the noise increases as speed increases.

The noise is not present when the hardtop is removed and the convertible top is used in its place.

CAUSE
When the convertible top is in the closed position, it causes the cowl panel seal to become permanently deformed in the areas near the A-pillars. When the hardtop is subsequently installed, the deformed area becomes a path for wind noise.

CORRECTION
A filler piece can be installed under the sealing lip of the cowl panel seal and if necessary, the hardtop catches can be adjusted.

PROCEDURE

1. Install 2 filler pieces under the sealing lip of the cowl panel seal as described in Attachment 1.

2. Retest for the presence of any wind noise.

3. Only if the wind noise persists, remove the shims from the hardtop catches and adjust the hardtop as described in Attachment 2.
