SUBJECT
Clicking/Popping Noise from Dash at Startup
MODEL
E85 (Z4)
SITUATION
The customer states that when the vehicle is started, or the ignition switch is turned on, there is a clicking/popping noise coming from the dash area.
CAUSE
Mis-alignment of the fresh air/recirculation flap gears.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the panel below the glove box as per RA 51 45 181.
2. Remove the glove box to gain access to the actuator for the fresh air/recirculation flap.
3. Inspect the gears that drive the fresh air/recirculation flap on the RH side of the air conditioning housing for damaged or broken teeth. Note that replacement parts are IHK dependent.
4. Before installation of the new gears it is helpful to mark the gear teeth as follows.
5. On the stepper gear (white) mark the 2 tall (1) and 2 medium (2) height teeth using a marker.
6. On the flap drive gear (black), mark the tall (4) tooth and the medium (3) tooth with white touch up paint.
7. In the final assembled position the medium (3) tooth on the flap drive gear must be aligned between the 2 medium (2) teeth on the stepper gear gear.
8. Failure to properly align the 2 gears will result in a clicking/popping noise.
9. Check the operation of the fresh air/recirculation flap.
10. Reassemble the glove box and lower trim panel
