SUBJECT
When Using Remote, Convertible Top Doesn't Open or Stops Part-Way
MODEL
E85 (Z4) without integrated garage door opener in the rearview mirror
E46 (3 Series Convertible) without integrated garage door opener in the rearview mirror.
SITUATION
When using the remote key for convenience opening of the convertible top, it doesn't work, or stops opening in an undefined position.
Remote key will always unlock and lock doors.
The convenience open function for the convertible top works properly when using the key in door lock cylinder or by pressing the top opening button in the dashboard.
CAUSE
Signal interference between the remote key and the remote receiver in the rearview mirror.
CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, follow the following steps.
1. Check vehicle battery voltage, recharge if necessary.
2. Perform remote control key test plan in DIS/GT1
3. When key doesn't pass the test, order a new key.
4. When key passes the test follow the next steps.
5. Disassemble the rear view mirror; follow repair instruction RA 51 16 060
"Removing and installing/replacing interior rearview mirror (overview)"
6. Cut a piece of adhesive metal foil tape approx. 1 feet long by approx. 1 inch wide. In order to isolate the conductive aluminum foil from the electronic circuit, do not remove the backing tape.
7. Install the tape in the mirror as shown (1) with the backing tape facing the interior electronics of the mirror.
8. Reassemble the rearview mirror; follow repair instruction RA 51 16 060 'Removing and installing/replacing interior rearview mirror (overview)'
9. Check the functionality of the system.
IMPORTANT:
Please advise the customer that this repair will offer an improvement for the customer's concern.
However, the remote signal will continue to be interrupted by other remote controls and transmitting devices, depending upon the frequency, proximity and signal strength.
FOR EXAMPLE: This is most likely to occur in a parking lot situation.
The operation of another vehicle remote control parked in the vicinity of the customer car, will interrupt the convenience opening operation.
We would like to take the opportunity to say "Thank You" to Dave Craft at Habberstad BMW and to Bill Wexler FSE Eastern Region for developing and testing this work around solution.
