SUBJECT
Door Window Mounting on Regulator Loosens
MODEL
Z4
SITUATION
When the door windows of Z4s produced before 3/04 are adjusted to their highest position, the pinch bolt in the adjusting wedge can sometimes loosen. This causes the window mounting on the regulator to loosen, allowing the window to move around and make noise.
CAUSE
When the adjustment wedge is at its highest position, there is limited contact between the two halves of the wedge. The fine teeth on the wedge can slip downward, allowing the pinch bolt to loosen.
CORRECTION
The adjustment wedges were redesigned with coarser teeth to ensure adequate contact to hold the two halves of the wedge together, even at the upper setting. These parts were introduced into production in 3/04.
For cars produced before 3/04, a clip to support the adjustment wedge when it is adjusted to the highest position is now available.
PROCEDURE
If the window adjustment wedge is raised to the highest position, install a clip to prevent it from loosening.
Remove the outer door handle per Repair Instructions, section 51 21 170.
Loosen the pinch bolt (1) holding the adjustment wedge. The wedge will drop down to its lowest position.
Push the wedge (1) back up to the highest setting.
Slide the clip (1) into place under the wedge (2) as shown.
This view is with the pinch bolt and covering removed. It shows the installed position of the clip (1) on the hooked portion (2) of the inner half of the wedge, holding up the outer half of the wedge (3).
Adjust the window per Repair Instructions, section 51 32 154
Tighten the pinch bolt (1) to 9 Nm.
Note:
This torque value differs from that listed in TIS
