Campaign - Oil Level Sensor Wiring Cable Retrofit

SI B12 11 04
Engine Electrical Systems

February 2004
Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Retrofit the Power Supply Cable for the Thermal Oil Level Sensor.

MODEL
E85 (Z4) produced from 10/11/02 through 8/24/04.

SITUATION

The power supply cable for the thermal oil level sensor was not routed in the vehicle wiring harness resulting in an inoperative oil level sensor.

If the oil level sensor does not function, the yellow warning lamp in the instrument cluster will not illuminate to alert the driver to the oil level dropping below minimum level. If the engine oil level is not checked regularly with the dipstick, there is the possibility of insufficient oil level in the engine. If the driver continues to drive with insufficient oil level, eventually the red warning light will illuminate indicating a loss of oil pressure. This could result in engine damage if the customer takes no action.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves Z4 vehicles with the 2.5 and 3.0 liter engines which were produced from 10/11/02 through 8/24/04.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Retrofit a power supply cable for the thermal oil level sensor.

PROCEDURE

1. Open the electronics box at the rear of the engine compartment, left hand side.

2. Identify connectors X601 1(2) and X6021 (1) in the E-box.

3. Using crimping pliers 61 4 321 (part of crimping set 61 4 320), in conjunction with crimping head 61 4 325, crimp pin contact (2) to the end of a piece of 150 mm length 18 gauge wire. Follow Repair Instruction 61 13 Crimping Micro Power Quadlock (MPQ) contacts.

4. Remove engine connector X6011 from the E-box wall. In the lower halve of the connector (on the right side in the illustration), the power supply line (in cavity # 2) is missing.

5. Disconnect connector X6011 and release the catch in its lower part.

6. Insert the crimped MPQ pin contact (1) into the pin 2 cavity of connector X6011 (2). Lock connector and reconnect.

7. Using the connecting piece (2), connect other end of wire (1) to green/white pin 4 wire (3) in connector X6021. Reassemble vehicle.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 433. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-267) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 433 (3) printed on the label and

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
