Mileage Display Block
Mileage/BC/SI LCD Matrix Display
The BC display block is used to show the total and trip mileage. Orange back lighting is used for the LCD display. Below the mileage display, the clock of the BC is displayed unless another BC function is called up using the turn signal lever as on previous models.
The display block is also used to display the Service Interval Indicator. Starting with the E46, a new method for display of the SI is employed. The green and red LEDs are no longer used to display the amount of time until the next service or inspection is due. With the new system, the actual mileage remaining until the next service will be displayed for 5 seconds when the ignition is switched on. The text "OIL SERVICE" or "INSPECTION" will also illuminate to show what service is due. While the SI data is being displayed, all other data in the display block will be canceled. A "-" symbol before the text display indicates that a service is past due.
The fuel consumption process for determining the service intervals is similar to the SI III introduced with the E39. A set volume of fuel (in liters) is stored in the EEPROM of the SI. The volume of fuel is dependent on the vehicle and engine size. The SI processor receives the "ti" signal from the engine control module as the vehicle is driven. The SI processor also receives the distance pulse from the ASC control module that is input to the cluster.
Based on the amount of fuel consumed and the distance traveled, the processor calculates the distance remaining to the next service.
