SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall 06E-A01: N52, M54, M56 - Reprogramming Vehicle (DME) for OBD Diagnostic

MODEL
E90, E91 and E60, E61 with N52 produced up to 10/04/2005
E46, E60, E83, E85 with M54, M56 produced from 08/2004 up to 09/2005

SITUATION

The DME programming, as originally installed, may cause the OBD diagnostic not to detect potential malfunctions of various emission relevant sensors. As a result, in case of a sensor malfunction, a pending fault code will be erased rather then permanently stored in the DME memory. Consequently, the "Service Engine Soon" light will not illuminate. In one case (P1030 Valvetronic position control), the diagnostic works correctly, but the scan tool cannot read out the fault code.

This diagnostic software error would not cause any drivability problems.

In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to reprogram the DME control module on all affected vehicles. With the completion of this campaign, the software in the E90, E91, E60, E61, E46, E83 and E85 vehicle's control units will be updated as described in SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure B.

A copy of the customer letters are shown in this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

On N52 equipped vehicles, update and recode complete vehicle as per SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure B using Progman V21.00.01 (Target Data Status E06006-03-510, and E89x-06-03-510), or higher.

Always use the latest version of Progman with a hardwired connection to the OPS interface.

Use only the approved BMW Deutronic battery charger (PN 99 00 0 003 944) set to "Power Supply" mode and properly configured to both the proper battery AH rating and higher 14.8 programming voltage. Refer to SI B04 11 02 and SI B04 27 06 for additional information.

The vehicle battery must be fully charged and at shop temperature prior to beginning all programming. On M54, M56 equipped vehicles, reprogram DME using Progman V24.00, or higher. Always use the latest version of Progman with a hardwired connection to the DK interface.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
It came to our attention that during DME reprogramming for Emissions Recall 06E-A01, a certain percentage of MS45.1 DME control modules on E46 and E83 vehicles equipped with GM5 automatic transmissions may abort programming. As a result, communication with DME is no longer possible and vehicle does not start. Problem is currently under investigation.

In the meantime, follow the procedure below when programming E46, E83 with GM5 for Emissions Recall 06E-A01:

Prior to DME programming on E46, E83 with GM5 transmission, disconnect EGS transmission control module.

[NEW] In the unlikely event of a DME programming failure or interruption after EGS disconnection, disconnect DME and leave it unplugged for at least 12 hours.

[NEW] Reconnect DME and start new programming session.

[NEW] If programming still fails, DO NOT REPLACE DME !!!

[NEW] Perform complete DME recovery procedure using the following steps:

1. Submit a PuMA case titled "MS45 crashes during 06E-A01", requesting the programmed and basic control unit numbers that must be manually entered in Progman.

2. Perform full battery reset by connecting both battery cables through the fused jumper cable (e.g. PN 88 88 6 611 476) for approximately 30 seconds.

3. With KL15 turned on, verify that the DME main relay is energized and each and every power input to the DME are correct (refer to the ETM). If the DME main relay does not energize-manually power-up the DME by jumping the main relay (K6300) terminals 30 (power supply) and 87 (power output to DME). In order to do this, remove the main relay from its socket. Jump corresponding terminals in the relay connector (KL30 & KL87) with fused jumper cable (e.g. PN 88 88 6 611 476).

4. Start a new Progman session and the following path:

5. DME / Programming / Update software

6. Using the virtual keyboard - enter the programmed and basic numbers provided in the PuMA case.

7. Enter Programmed number first - this is the same as the new part number from the original measures plan

8. Enter the basic number second - as provided in the PuMA response.

9. The measures plan is created and press "Accept" to complete.

10. If DME is still not responding Do not replace it!

11. Request an approval/contact number, via the PuMA case (as per SI B12 09 04) to ship the DME control module for recovery to:

BMW of North America, LLC
1 BMW Plaza
Montvale, NJ 07645
Attention: Technical Service / Drivetrain

Important:
Only cases with contact number and only shipments through pre-paid Fed Ex will be processed. DME's are normally recovered and returned via Fed-Ex the next business day.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

After the vehicle has been checked and corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-319) and with a ball point pen print your dealer code (5 digits) on the Recall Completion Label (see illustration). An initial quantity of 50 labels will be sent to all BMW automotive centers. Peel the label from its backing and affix it to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to windshield.

For California centers only: It is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed orange "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD92-084, see illustration) be provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California) once the Recall on their vehicle has been completed.

Note:
Additional labels can be ordered on line at BMW TIS.

Warranty Information

Reimbursement for this Recall Campaign will be via normal claim entry utilizing the information shown.
