Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B62 01 05 dated March 2005.

SUBJECT
Oil Service Interval Incorrectly Coded in IKE

MODEL
E53 X5 4.4i/4.8is produced from 01/23/05 up to 02/22/05

SITUATION

Service Interval Indicator in the instrument cluster displays a need for an oil change after approximately 500 miles of driving (no green lights remains in the Kombi display).

CAUSE

Incorrect coding data for the instrument cluster (IKE/Kombi).

CORRECTION

On the affected vehicles, prior to customer delivery, or the next time vehicle is for service, or on a customer complaint basis, recode Instrument Cluster/IKE with DIS CD40, CD 40.1, CD41.1 (when available), or higher.

[NEW]DO NOT PERFORM UNNECESSARY OIL CHANGE ON VEHICLES WITH A PREMATURE OIL SERVICE INDICATION.

IMPORTANT:
Do not code IKE/Kombi with DIS CD 41.0 when it becomes available (planned release in the mid March). CD41.0 contains the same Kombi error and it is not going to correct the problem.

Table's shown contains VINs of all affected X5 4.4i and X5 4.8is vehicles.

PROCEDURE

To verify if the incorrect IKE coding data was used for service intervals (SIA):

^ 1. Connect vehicle to DIS/GT1 and select Function Selection.

^ 2. Select Body / Display & Information / Instrument cluster (IKE/Kombi).

^ 3. Select Test Plan.

^ 4. Select Instrument cluster (IKE high), then right arrow.

^ 5. Select 4. Instrument cluster E38/E53 (with integrated IKE), then right arrow.

^ 6. Select 3. Service Function

^ 7. Select 2. Read SIA data

^ 8. From the report "SIA data inspection limit coded" read the amount of gallons. The correct total consumption amount should be 1008 gallons. The incorrect data for X5 4.4i is 47 gallons, for X5 4.8is is 82 gallons.

To recode IKE/Kombi:

^ 1. Connect vehicle to the BMW-approved battery charger.

^ 2. Connect vehicle to GT1/DISplus with CD4O.0 or higher.

^ 3. Select 3 - ZCS/FA coding, then E53.

^ 4. Select 10 - IKE/KOMBI.

^ 5. Select 2 - Recode control module.
