Differential Assembly: Testing and Inspection

27 10 002 Checking function of front axle differential and transfer case
Possible faults:
- Drivetrain blocked.
- Locking of drivetrain when cornering (tires grinding).

Note: To obtain evidence of function of transfer case, carry out following tasks:
- Place vehicle on lifting platform.
- Shift transmission to neutral. (Automatic: position "N").
- Raise vehicle, wheels must spin freely.
- Apply Hand brake. Both front wheels rotate uniformly in one direction.

Spinning of both front wheels in one direction not possible:
1. Check front axle differential:
- Remove front propeller shaft.
- Check front axle differential for ease of movement.
- Blockable front axle differential only:
^ Replace this differential

2. Check transfer case:
- Release Hand brake.
- Rotate both drive shafts of transfer case against each other.
- Turning of both drive shafts not possible:
^ Replace transfer case.

Front wheels can spin:
1. Check transfer case for shaft fracture.
- Remove transfer case.
- Withdraw drive shaft and check for fracture.
- Shaft fracture:
^ Replace drive shaft.

2. Front axle differential and transfer case
- Install drive shaft.
- Block drive shaft by hand.
- Rotate output shaft to final drive.
- Output shaft to front axle does not turn:
^ Replace transfer case.

Installation:
Replace radial shaft seal for output front axle.

Note: If no faults have been identified in this function check: check chassis and suspension control systems (e.g. DSC ADB-X).
