SUBJECT
Erroneous Brake Pad Replacement Message

MODEL
[NEW] E90, E91, E92, E93

[NEW] From SOP to 9/07

SITUATION
The Dynamic Stability Control module (DSC) calculates the brake pad replacement intervals based on information from the front and rear axle brake pad wear sensors. When replacement of the front and or rear brake pads is necessary, the DSC control module triggers an indicator lamp located in the vehicle's instrument cluster. However, the brake pad indicator lamp may be illuminated although a replacement of the brake pads is not necessary. Additionally, one or both of the following fault codes may be stored in the DSC control module:

^ 5DE0 Brake-pad wear: plausibility, front axle

^ 5DE1 Brake-pad wear: plausibility, rear axle

CAUSE
DSC software error

PROCEDURE

1. [NEW] Perform a vehicle test using the latest ISTA diagnostic software version.

Note:
When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section. This documentation is not necessary when part of an approved Technical Service repair procedure; the battery charger is required to be attached before performing the Vehicle Test.

2. If DSC has faults 5DE0 and or 5DE1, enter the test plan.

3. In the test plan, check the CBS data.

4. If the CBS data shows a value within the nominal range (100% or less), work through the entire test plan.

5. If the CBS data shows an erroneous value such as 255%, the vehicle must be programmed.

6. [NEW] Program the vehicle with the most recent ISTA/P version (target data status E89X-07-09-518 or later). Refer to SI B09 05 01 (New Programming and Coding System: ISTA/P), Procedure B.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

[NEW] WARRANTY INFORMATION

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.

Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.

If a control module fails to program correctly or initializations are required, the additional work must be claimed with separate labor operations under the applicable defect code listed above; refer to KSD2

Other Repairs

If performing other ISTA diagnostics and the related test plans results with eligible and covered work, claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.

Note:

Please follow any TeileClearing (TC) or Diagcode (DC) requirements that may apply to this additional work.
