SI B16 03 06Engine Electrical Systems
October 2006
Technical Service
This Service Information bulletin replaces B12 05 05 dated September 2005.
SUBJECT
Vehicle is Difficult to Refuel
MODEL
E90 and E91 (3 Series) All models produced up to September 2006
SITUATION
Vehicle is difficult to refuel and a strong fuel smell may also be encountered during refueling.
CAUSE
The tank ventilation system may have been saturated with fuel due to a missing cap located on the right Fuel Level Sensor cover.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the right fuel level sensor and verify the cap is installed properly on the underside of the cover as shown in the illustrations below.
Cap Installed
Cap Missing
2. If the cap is missing, verify the production date located on top of the fuel level sensor cover date code can be determined using the following illustration below. If the date code is up to 134/06, replace the fuel level sensor. If the date code is after 134/06, then submit a Puma case to the Drivetrain Group and replace the Fuel Level Sensor.
Fuel Level Sensor Date Code:
134/06 = 134th day of 2006
3. If the cap is not missing, ensure the vent tube from the fuel tank to the DMTL and Carbon Canister is not restricted causing the fuel system to vapor lock during refueling. Verify the vent line from the carbon canister and filter is not restricted.
4. Replace any vent lines and/or filter if found restricted.
5. Replace the DMTL and Carbon Canister if they have come in contact with raw fuel.
6. Before releasing the vehicle to the customer ensure the vehicle passes the DMTL Tank Leakage Test.
NOTE:
Replace only the components that were found defective during the diagnostic path outlined above.
