Power Steering - Incorrect Reservoir Cap Installed
SI B32 12 05Steering and Wheel Alignment
July 2005
Technical Service
SUBJECT
Incorrect Power Steering Reservoir Cap
MODEL
E90 (3 Series) produced up to July 2005.
SITUATION
On some vehicles filled with Pentosin (green power steering fluid), an ATF reservoir cap was mistakenly installed.
CAUSE
Assembly error.
CORRECTION
If the power steering fluid used in the system is Pentosin (green fluid), and the reservoir cap has ATF on it, apply a Pentosin label on the top of the cap. The Pentosin label will cover the word ATF so that it is clear to anyone that the fluid in the system is Pentosin.
PROCEDURE
^ Clean the cap with a degreasing agent to ensure that it is free of dirt and any residual fluid.
^ Apply the Pentosin label on top of the cap.
NOTES
1. Always check the steering fluid in the system before refilling or topping up.
2. Pentosin (green fluid) and ATF (red fluid) can not be mixed.
3. Before using a different type of fluid, the system has to be completely drained and flushed.
4. When draining the fluid, turn the steering wheel to both full lock positions.
5. Vehicles equipped with Active Front Steering (AFS) and Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) should have Pentosin fluid.
