This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B72 10 05 dated May 2006.

[NEW] designates changes to this revision

SUBJECT
Airbag Warning Lamp, FC93B4 and/or 93A8

MODEL
E90, E91 (3 Series)

Vehicles produced from start of production to -:

March 31, 2006 (with sports steering wheel - SA255 or SA710)

May 19, 2006 (without sports steering wheel SA249 only)

SITUATION
The red airbag warning lamp in the instrument cluster lights up permanently. For vehicle with a CID (Central Information Display), a Check Control message indicates a passive restraint system fault.

The following intermittent fault codes are stored:
MRS (Multiple Restraint Module fault codes 93A8 and/or 93B4 "Driver's airbag stage 1 / stage 2".

CAUSE
Wiring/connection fault related to the design of the slip ring (rotary coupler)

[NEW] CORRECTION
Replace the slip ring with a revised part with an MQS connector that links the slip ring to the airbag. The mating connector also has to be replaced. Depending on the steering wheel installed in the vehicle, this requires either the replacement of the cable between the airbag and the slip ring, or replacement of the complete airbag.

[NEW] PROCEDURE

For vehicles with sports steering wheel (SA255 or SA710):

1. Remove driver's front airbag (refer to Repair Instructions RA 32 34 030 Removing and installing/replacing airbag unit).

2. Check the part number on the slip ring. If the part number is 6 967 324, replace the slip ring with revised part with MQS connector system. (Refer to Repair Instructions RA 61 31 011 Removing and installing/replacing volute spring cassette)

3. Remove the connecting cable between the airbag and the slip ring and replace with new part with MQS connector system.

4. Before installing the replacement cable, modify it as follows:

Note:
Replacement cables P/N 32 30 6 779 156 and later require no modification.

5. Unwrap the harness tape (1) that retains the ground wire (2). Move the ground wire clear of other wires.

6. Using BMW harness tape P/N 61 13 8 357 831, wrap tape around remaining wires as shown (1). The tape should be 10mm from the connector (A), and 20mm long (B).

7. Install the cable. Use a cable tie (2) to hold the cable (1) in place. Position the cable tie so that the lock and cut end point downwards as shown.

8. Reinstall the airbag, reconnect the battery and delete fault codes. For vehicles with standard multifunction steering wheel (SA249) (without options SA255 or SA710):

1. Remove driver's front airbag (refer to Repair Instructions RA 32 34 020 Removing and installing/replacing airbag unit).

2. Check the part number on the slip ring. If the part number is 6 967 324, replace the slip ring with revised part with MQS connector system. (Refer to Repair Instructions RA 61 31 011 Removing and installing/replacing volute spring cassette)

3. Replace the airbag with revised part with MQS connector system.

4. Reconnect the battery and delete fault codes
