SI B51 23 07
Body Equipment

December 2007
Technical Service

SUBJECT
Roller Cover Binds when Convenience Opening

MODEL
E91 (3 Series Sports Wagon) produced up to 4/2007

SITUATION
When opening the upper portion of the tailgate with the roller cover in the fully extended position, the roller cover does not travel up the D-Pillar automatically as it should.

CAUSE
The distance between the D-Pillar's is too narrow due to the fact that:

A. A preload exists on the D-Pillar trim

B. The roller cover bracket is installed too far inboard

CORRECTION
Modify the mounting of the D-Pillar trim and/or position of the roller cover brackets.

PROCEDURE
Reproduce the complaint to confirm that the roller cover is binding due to the gap between the D-Pillars being too narrow.

Procedure A:

1. Loosen the 3 fasteners (1) on the D-Pillar trim to relieve any preload on this trim and then resecure them.

2. Test the operation of the roller cover and if the binding still exists, continue with Procedure B.

Procedure B:

1. Remove the D-Pillar trim panel from either side per repair instruction RA 51 43 259 to expose the roller cover bracket.

2. Use a paint marker to outline the bottom of the bracket to ensure it's moved the correct amount.

3. Loosen the 2 lower fasteners (1) on the bracket.

4. Rotate the bracket outward, about the upper fastener, by 1mm.

5. Secure the loose fasteners and test the operation.

6. If additional outward adjustment is necessary, perform steps 3-7 for the opposite side roller cover bracket.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
