DSC Warning - Various SZL FCs Stored

SITUATION

The DSC warning shows in the Instrument Cluster. An amber "BRAKE" warning may also be displayed.

Some or all of the following SZL (Steering Column Switch Sensor) fault codes are stored:

^ 5E43 - LWS (Steering Angle Sensor) internal fault.

^ 94B4 - F-CAN LWS sensor failure

^ 94B5 - F-CAN LWS sensor failure

^ 94B6 - F-CAN LWS sensor failure

or

^ A85D - Faulty LWS (E60, E61, E63, E64 only)

CAUSE

Faulty LWS

^ Contamination of internal optic disk - optic disk material changed April 30, 2006.

or

^ Processor programming error (E60, E61, E63, E64 only) - corrected on parts dated 03.12.05 (Dec 3, 2005).

Note:
The part production date is shown on the lower left corner of the barcode label.

[NEW] PROCEDURE

Replace the SZL.

Note that the slip ring must be transferred from the faulty part to the replacement part. Follow the repair instructions in "Attachment Procedure 1 - 3".

Stocks of the old SZL have been cleared from stock. Updated parts can be recognized by the index number that is shown on the part number label immediately to the right of the part number. For example, LZ 9 111 997 0202 - in this case, the last 7 digits of the P/N are 9 111 997, and the index number is 02.

For E90:

^ The index number must be 03, or higher.

For E60:

^ The index number must be 02, or higher for P/Ns in the range 9 111 997 to 9 111 999

^ The index number must be 03, or higher for P/Ns in the range 9 115 165 to 9 115 167

61 31 011 Removing and installing/replacing volute spring cassette

Necessary preliminary tasks:

^ Remove fixture for steering column stalk.





Unlock catches (1).

Press lock (2) and remove volute spring cassette (4) in direction of arrow from fixture for steering column stalk (3).





Important!
^ Do not turn ring (1).

^ Also turning ring (1) through 360° is not p

^ Secure ring (1) against unauthorized turn adhesive tape).

Installation:

Ring (1) in fixture for steering column stalk (2) must be positioned so that opening (3) for driving pin (of volute spring cassette) is located at arrowed position (4).





Important!
Fit the volute spring cassette (1) in such a way that the guide (2) can slide exactly into the associated opening of the fixture for the steering column stalk (3).
