SUBJECT
Water Droplets are Blown from Center Vents with A/C On
MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series)
E63, E64 (6 Series)
Vehicles produced from October 2, 2005 to December 29, 2005
SITUATION
The customer states when using the air conditioning system on medium to high speed blower, water droplets are blown from the cent vents.
[NEW] CAUSE
1. Evaporator drain on housing blocked (manufacturing error, only vehicles produced from October 2, 2005 to December 29, 2005).
2. Evaporator ices up after a long drive.
3. Excessive vacuum within the evaporator housing on high blower speed, prevents condensation from draining properly. Caused by faulty drain hose flap.
[NEW] PROCEDURE
1. Remove the 2 front side covers of the center console.
2. Disconnect both evaporator drain hoses at the evaporator housing.
3. Inspect the drain elbow on the evaporator housing for blockage (a thin plastic membrane will block the drain passage). The depth of the drain port in the elbow is approximately 45 - 50 mm. With a blocked drain the depth of the port is only 20 - 30 mm
4. If the evaporator drain passage is blocked, use a drill bit (diameter of opening approximately 10 mm) and drill both drain passages out. Clean all plastic shavings from the housing.
5. If the evaporator drain passage is not blocked, check both evaporator drain hoses for flow by pouring water in each hose. Water should immediately exit from each hose end.
6. If the evaporator drain passages on the housing are good, refer to SI B64 04 05 for information about possible evaporator icing up which can cause excessive moisture in the air conditioning housing.
7. Replace both evaporator drain hoses if other measures performed did not repair the vehicle.
8. If the previous steps do not repair the vehicle, submit a PuMA case to the Electrics Group for further assistance.
