SI B12 19 05
Engine Electrical Systems

October 2005
Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: N52 Reprogram Vehicle for OBD Diagnostic

MODEL
E90/E91 and E60/E61 with N52 produced from 02/01/05 up to 09/14/05

SITUATION
Due to the DME software error, the OBD diagnostic may not illuminate the "Service Engine Soon" light when certain signal plausibility faults are stored in DME. This diagnostic software error would not cause any drivability problems.

Updated software is available and should be installed before customer delivery or the next time the vehicle is in the shop.

CORRECTION

On the affected vehicles, reprogram/recode control modules using CIP V 19.1, or higher.

For programming/coding instructions, refer to SIB 09 05 01 (Coding/Individualization/Programming) Procedure "B".

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 325i/iA/xi/xiA/xiTA, 330i/iA/xi/xiA, 525i/iA/xi/xiA and 530i/iA/xi/xiA/xiT/xiTA vehicles with N52 engine which were produced from 02/01/2005 up to 09/14/2005.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

9. Select "DSC 6-cylinder", and "Continue" through the DSC calibration test module, until the Final Report is displayed again.

On vehicles WITH Active Steering (Option Code 0217):

10. After the final report with DSC errors is displayed, terminate the CIP session.

11. Disconnect vehicle from the SSS and connect it to the DIS/GT1.

12. After vehicle identification, select "Function Selection", then "Service functions", "Chassis", and then "Active front steering".

13. After answering "No" to the question: "Continue with short test?", proceed with the test plan "Starting/adjustment, active front steering" by selecting right arrow.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 448. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-311) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 448 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
