Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Modifying the Rear Water Drain Hoses

MODEL
E64 (6 Series) produced up to 8/2006

SITUATION
The convertible top stowage compartment has 4 drains to allow water to exit from it. Over time, these drains may become blocked by leaves and debris. Once these drains are clogged, water may collect and overflow into the trunk, damaging various electronic components.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 6 Series vehicles which were produced up to 8/2006.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Unclog and then modify the affected drain. In isolated cases, new drain(s) should be installed.

PROCEDURE
The following procedure is outlined for one side of the vehicle. The same process should be carried out for the opposite side.

1. Loosen the rear part of the rear wheel well liner. Refer to repair instruction RA 51 71 041 for reference.

2. Pull back the wheel well liner (1) to expose the water drain outlet flap. This drain is seated to the body immediately behind the wheel well liner.

3. Pull on the flap (1) covering the outlet to remove it from the drain. Dispose of the removed flap and do not reinstall it when testing has concluded.

4. Remove any debris that was trapped at the end of the drain tube.

5. Open the convertible top cover.

6. Inspect the water drainage as follows:

a. Pour approximately A 1/2 a gallon of water toward each of the drains (1) in the stowage compartment and watch the water drain out of the outlet tube in the wheel well. The drains are located adjacent to the rear shock mount (2) and flexible cover leading into the luggage compartment (3).

b. If the water is flowing properly out of the outlet tube, no further actions are necessary. Continue to step 9.

c. If the water is NOT flowing properly out of the outlet tube, and only trickles out, replace that drain tube assembly. Both drain tube assemblies should not be replaced unless each are not flowing properly at this time. Continue to Step 7.

7. Remove the luggage compartment trim as well as the wheel well liner per repair instruction RA 51 47 140.

8. Install a new drain tube assembly. The modified outlet flap which is on the new drain tube assembly does not need to be removed. Ensure when it's installed that the tubing does not sag down in such a way that water will collect and not drain out smoothly.

9. Begin again from step 1 for the opposite side drain.

10. Reinstall any removed parts.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 528. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-352) and:

B. Punch out code number 528 (2), printed on the label; and

C. Affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
