Rear entertainment
E65, E66

Introduction
In the past, certain components and functions could only be operated by the front-seat occupants.
Growing demand for more comfort in the rear is reflected in particular on the E65/E66.
More rear comfort, not just through an air conditioner. Also in the area of entertainment.
The E65/E66 can be equipped with the special equipment option 603 "Rear monitor". This special equipment forms the basis of the rear entertainment system.

The rear entertainment system offers the following benefits:
- Maximum degree of comfort and exclusivity.
- Audio sources can be used independently of one another (audio CD via loudspeakers and audio DVD via headphones). For the E65MU, the CD changer is also an MP3 player.
- High resolution for films on DVD.
- Easy operation via the rear controller.
- Possible to watch TV or films during a journey. Digital television now possible with best possible reception quality.

Analogue and digital television are described in a separate SI Technology bulletin [for more information, please refer to SI Technology bulletin (SBT) 65 07 04 105] Description and Operation.

Brief description of components
The following additional components are installed for the rear entertainment system:

- Rear display
The rear display is an advanced TFT display with picture format 16:9. The visible area is 144 mm x 79.5 mm gross (6.5") with a resolution of 400 x 240 pixels.
The rear display is connected to the rear display control unit by an LVDS data wire (Low Voltage Differential Signaling).

- Headphones connector module
The headphones connector module is integrated into the rear compartment center armrest. The headphones connector module has 2 active connections for the headphones. When headphones are connected, the sound is emitted through the headphones. The two sets of headphones can only receive a single common audio source.
The headphones are not part of the delivery specification. All standard headphones with an impedance of 8 to 600 ohms can be connected. The plug connector has a diameter of 3.5 mm.

The following control units are needed for the rear entertainment system:
- SG-FD: Rear display control unit
The rear display has its own control unit.
The rear display control unit is installed in the center console. The rear display control unit is connected to the MOST network.
The control unit receives analogue video signals from the video module via a red-green-blue wire. The control signals are transmitted via the K-CAN SYSTEM. The control unit rear display generates digital image signals that are transmitted to the rear display via a LVDS data wire. These image signals are converted to a graphic image in the rear display.

- FCON: Rear controller
The rear controller is ergonomically located on the center armrest in the rear compartment.
In terms of construction and operation, the rear controller is identical to the controller in the front.
The rear controller is connected to the rear compartment center armrest control center via a ribbon cable.
The K-CAN SYSTEM is looped through the rear compartment center armrest control center.
- BZMF: Rear compartment center armrest control center
In principle, the BZMF has the same functions as the center console switch center in the front. The rear compartment center armrest control center holds the rear controller and the seat adjustment buttons. The headphones connector module is on the front of the center armrest.
The rear compartment center armrest control center is the interface between the rear controller and the bus system
- KHI: Headphones interface
The headphones interface is located at the rear left in the luggage compartment. The headphones interface forms the interface between the optical MOST bus and the headphones connector module.
The audio data and the control signals travel through the MOST bus to the headphones interface. The audio signals generated by the two control units (e.g. tuner, CD, DVD) are transmitted to the headphones interface with a sensing frequency of 44.1 kHz. The headphones interface processes the audio data for each headphones socket separately. The headphone connector module receives the analogue audio data through the stereo cable for each set of headphones.
- VM: Drive video module
The drive video module is located at the rear left in the luggage compartment, under the navigation computer. The drive video module is only used with option 603 "Rear monitor" (e.g. instead of video module 5).
The drive video module processes the video signals from the DVD changer and from the navigation computer. The drive video module has 3 TV tuners to ensure interference-free TV reception even while the vehicle is being driven.
This is why the system is designated "Drive": because the system can still be used in the rear while the vehicle is being driven.
The drive video module offers the following functions:
- TV reception even while the vehicle is being driven (in rear only)
- Data copying and output on both displays
- Output of different entertainment sources on both displays
- Decoding of FBAS (Composite Video Burst Synchronization) signals with respect to color
- Connection of video camera possible (e.g. for special solutions with individual equipment)
- DVDC: DVD changer or DVD multimedia changer
The DVD changer is located at the rear left in the luggage compartment, above the navigation computer. It is only possible to insert or remove the magazine from inside the luggage compartment.
The DVD changer is an advanced development of the CD changer. The DVD changer is not only able to play DVDs, but also any audio CD (multimedia-compatible). The DVD changer has a MOST interface for transmitting digital audio data. The image signals are transmitted to the video module via a FBAS wire. The video module duplicates the data. The data are then sent on to the Control Display and the rear display control unit via a red-green-blue wire.

System functions
The following system functions are described:

- Rules for more than one user
- Rear area deactivation
- Split screen display on Control Display
- Brightness control

Rules for more than one user
The range of functions in the vehicle is provided by the various control units. The rear passengers use the same control units (e.g. radio, telephone, DVD) as the front passengers.
To prevent access conflicts, the following rules apply:
- Headphones not connected
- Headphones connected

Headphones not connected
If headphones are not connected, sound will be emitted from the loudspeakers.
Only one source can then be accessed: e.g. radio, CD, television.
If both users access the same source, the last setting selected will overwrite the setting of the other user: e.g. change in radio station or volume ("last come, last served").
If a user wishes to change the source (e.g. from radio to CD), the last source selected will then be activated. The status indicators in the displays are then updated.
- Headphones connected
If at least on set of headphones is connected, it is possible to use 2 different audio sources.
The loudspeakers will play the audio source selected in the front on the Control Display (e.g. radio). The headphones in the rear will play the audio source selected on the rear display (e.g. CD). This means that it is possible to use 2 different audio sources at the same time.
Exception:
It is not possible to play a DVD on the rear display and at the same time listen to an audio CD in the DVD changer. The DVD changer is only able to play one medium at a time.

Rear area deactivation
The rear area deactivation can be selected in the front on the Control Display (CD): "Settings" menu, menu item "Rear"
This prevents changes being made, e.g. to the audio source, from the rear area.
It is still possible to change source from the front.
The rear area deactivation can be set to include various functions:
- Deactivated
The rear display is deactivated.
- Fully activated
All functions are available.
- Partially activated
Functions not used on the Control Display in the front are activated.
- Menus activated
The functions of certain menus can be activated individually:
- Communication
- Navigation
- BMW ASSIST
- Entertainment

Split screen display on Control Display
A split screen display on the Control Display is possible if the rear entertainment system is not installed.
Television and navigation can be displayed on the Control Display at the same time. The video module sends the television data to the navigation computer. Data for television and navigation are mixed. The navigation computer then sends the data to the Control Display via the RGB wire. The Control Display separates the data again for the split screen display.
This is not possible on vehicle with the rear entertainment system. The navigation data are sent to the video module via a RGB wire. The drive video module is not able to mix these data. The signals from the navigation computer or DVD changer are duplicated and sent to the front and rear. This means that only one function can be shown for each display.

Brightness control
A photocell in the rear display measures the surrounding brightness. The surrounding brightness is compared with the set brightness values. The display is adjusted to the surrounding brightness by darkening or brightening the image. This ensures that the display can always be read easily.

Operation
The following menus are currently activated for operation via the rear display:

- "Entertainment" menu:
Full range of functions as for the Control Display in the front. In addition, it is possible to watch television or DVDs while the vehicle is being driven.
- "Settings" menu:
The clock and the display brightness can be set. The button behind the rear controller can be assigned.
- "Climate" menu:
The independent ventilation and independent heating can be controlled.
- "BMW Assist" menu:
Functions such as "BMW Service" or "Traffic info" can be selected.
- "Communication" menu
Separate telephone with separate SIM card can be used regardless of front-seat occupants. When the rear SIM card is connected, the SMS text message and telephones lists can be seen.
- "On-board data" menu:
The on-board computer functions can be displayed. The limit and the stopwatch can be set.
- "Help" menu:
The menu name can be shown when selecting menus.

Switch-on conditions
The rear display can be operated when terminal 30 is switched on. The rear display must be folded open from its out-of-use position in the center console. A Hall sensor recognizes the direction in which the display is folded. The signal switches the rear display on or off. If the "Entertainment" menu is selected when the display is switched on, the same display appears as on the Control Display. Otherwise, the last menu selected will be displayed.
If battery capacity drops below a certain minimum, the power module (PM) will switch the rear display off.
