SUBJECT
"Check Gas Cap" Warning with DME FC 2A17 - DMTL, System Error

MODEL
E90, E91, E92 with N52 and N54 engines produced 8/1/2005 to 9/1/2006
E65, E66 with N62TU and N73 engines produced 8/1/2005 to 9/1/2006
E60, E61, E63, E64 with N52, N62 and N62TU engines produced 8/1/2005 to 12/1/2006

SITUATION
The customer states the "Check Gas Cap" warning lamp comes on after refueling. The "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light may also illuminate after the initial "Check Gas Cap" warning and there have been three cold starts.

DME FC 2A17 DMTL, system error is stored.

There is an additional DMTL gas cap test that runs after the vehicle has been refueled. Its purpose is to alert the driver if the gas cap is not fully secured. By promptly securing the gas cap, the driver may prevent the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light from being illuminated when the OBD required test preconditions are met and the DMTL test runs.

CAUSES
1. DME software sensitivity to current fluctuations from the DMTL electric motor when it begins to run causing the FC 2A17 to be stored in DME
2. Defective DMTL pump - The DMTL reference test does not properly run causing the fault entry.

CORRECTION
Follow the procedures as described below.

Important note:
For any DME DMTL faults indicating a leak, troubleshoot to determine the cause using the leak test procedure described in TIS Repair Instruction RA 16 00 510, and perform the necessary repairs.

PROCEDURE
For E90, E91, E92, E65, and E66 series:
1. On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram the vehicle using Progman V23.0 or higher to:
- Target data status E089-06-09-530 or higher for E90, E91, E92
- Target data status E065-06-09-530 or higher for E65, E66

2. Perform DMTL test module. If the lamp remains on, or the DMTL FC 2A17 returns, replace the DMTL pump in accordance with TIS Repair Instructions RA 16 13 015.

For E60, E61, E63, and E64 series vehicles only with engines as listed:
1. The revised DME software is planned for Progman V24.0 - planned release December 2006. Until that time, on a customer complaint basis only, replace the DMTL pump in accordance with TIS Repair Instructions RA 16 13 015.
