Rear Axle
Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B33 02 06 dated August 2006.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

SUBJECT
Recall Campaign 06V-277: Inspect Rear Shock Absorbers

MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series)

E63, E64 (6 Series)

E65, E66 (7 Series)

SITUATION
The defect involves the rear shock absorbers. Specifically, the lower rubber bushing may not have been manufactured to specification. Depending on vehicle operation and temperature conditions, this could lead to a loosening of the bushing within the shock absorber housing. If this condition was not corrected, then over time, the bushing could continue to loosen. Eventually, the bushing could separate from its housing.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series vehicles which were produced from January 9, 2006 through April 26, 2006.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

CORRECTION
The repair consists of inspecting the rear shock absorbers and replacing both rear shock absorbers as necessary.

PROCEDURE
With the vehicle properly supported on a lift, inspect the rear shock absorbers for a blue paint dot as shown in the illustration. If the blue dot is present, no further action is necessary.
If there is no blue paint dot, the rear shock absorbers must be replaced.

PARTS INFORMATION

In order to reduce repair time and inconvenience to the customer, the necessary parts should be ordered prior to the vehicle's arrival at your center. Due to the variation in equipment levels, the correct parts must be determined by entering each chassis number (VIN) in EPC.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 471. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-295) and:
A. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. punch out code number 471(2) printed on the label and,
C. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Special note for E61 vehicles only: up to 3 additional FRU can be claimed using Labor Operation 33 99 000 for vehicles with Option 493 stowage package
