SUBJECT
Panorama Sunroof Sunshade Noise
MODEL
E83 (X3) produced from 12/05 through 03/06
SITUATION
The customer may complain of a clicking or knocking noise when closing the panorama sunroof sunshade between 1/3 and 1/2 of its full travel.
The affected vehicles can be identified by the production date, as well as the "TLL" number located on the information label above the overhead control panel (1). Affected vehicles will have a TLL number between TLL507 and TLL510.
CAUSE
This is caused by a manufacturing defect in the limit stop on the sunroof cassette guide rails.
CORRECTION
Do not replace any parts.
A rework procedure has been developed to slightly modify the sunroof cassette guide rails to alleviate this noise.
On a customer complaint basis, please follow the procedure outlined below.
PROCEDURE
^ To perform this procedure, a special tool (BMW P/N 83 30 0 495 584) has been developed.
^ This tool should only be ordered if a customer complains of this condition and the vehicle fits in the affected production range.
^ Duplicate the customer's complaint by listening for a clicking or knocking noise from the right rear of the headliner while closing the sunshade from the full open position.
^ The noise will occur after the sunshade (1) has traveled between 1/3 and 1/2 of its full travel, or approximately 15 inches.
^ Remove the rear glass panel (1) of the panorama sunroof per Repair Instruction RA 54 10 175.
^ NOTE: The four T25 Torx screws securing the panel must be replaced when the rear glass panel is reinstalled.
^ Fully close the sunshade from inside the vehicle.
- From above, illuminate the gap between the sunshade and the roof skin on the right side of the vehicle to locate the limit stop (1) that is to be modified.
- The limit stop location is approximately 4 inches back from the rear edge of the sunroof opening, on the guide rail.
- The 2 locations on the limit stop (1) that will be compressed, using the special tool, are shown at the tips of the 2 arrows.
^ Rotate the bit (1) on the special tool counter clockwise to open the tool about A1/2 inch.
^ Place the special tool over the rail. The bottom of the tool has a ridge which fits into the guide rail, as shown by the arrow.
^ Gently slide the special tool back and forth on the rail until it engages in the recess in the guide rail.
- Look carefully between the two halves of the special tool to ensure that the tool is aligned correctly on the limit stop.
- Attach the provided flexible extension to the tool, and use a ratchet to tighten it until the 2 halves of the tool contact each other.
- The rail will be bent the precise amount to eliminate the noise.
- Repeat this process for the left side of the vehicle.
PARTS INFORMATION
[NEW] The required special tool no longer requires a PuMA case to be released.
