Campaign - Rear Hatch Trim Clip Replacement

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace Rear Hatch Trim Clips

MODEL
E83 (X3 SAV) with option code ZSP (Sport Package)

SITUATION





The clips holding the rear hatch lower trim panel (1)
may loosen under certain conditions, such as extended
driving over rough road surfaces or repeatedly closing
the tailgate with excessive force.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

This Service Action involves X3 SAV vehicles which were produced from 08/31/2005 until 09/05/2005.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System).

Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Replace the retaining clips of the rear hatch lower trim panel.

PROCEDURE





Open the rear hatch.

Insert the wedge tool (P/N 90 88 6 009
317) (1) at the lower corner of the rear
hatch between trim panel (2) and the metal
hatch (3).

Using the wedge tool (1), carefully pry on
the trim panel (2) working from one side to
the other until all the clips are released.





The trim panel is fitted with 13 fastening
clips.
Remove all 13 clips.
Note:
Special care must be taken since 2
different clips will be used depending on
clip location.
Install retaining clips P/N 07 14 3 414 651
(1) into the 3 central locations along the
upper painted edge of the trim panel as
shown. Install a rubber washer (P/N 51 13
3 415 081) (2) onto these 3 retaining clips
(1).
Note:
Do not remove the center aligning
pin (3) located in the lower edge of the trim
panel.
Replace the remaining 10 clips with P/N 51
13 7 065 607 and reinstall the trim panel.





PARTS INFORMATION

This Service Action has been assigned code number
449. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected
if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-278) and:

a. emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 449 (2) printed on the label and,





c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
