SUBJECT
X3 - MS45.1 Diagnostic for Fault Codes 2882, 2883 - Mixture is Too Lean

MODEL
X3 with 3.0L M54 produced up to 08/2006

SITUATION
The "Service Engine Soon" light is illuminated and Faults 2882, 2883 fuel trim, mixture too lean are stored.

CAUSE
Possible causes may be unmetered air leaks, insufficient fuel quantity, or an incorrect air filter element.

PROCEDURE
Do not clear faults or mixture adaptations.

Check nominal values and record the additive and multiplicative fuel trim mixture adaptation values.

Perform basic troubleshooting on the air induction and fuel system as recommended in the diagnostic test plans.

Remove and inspect the air filter element. Only an original BMW filter, PN 13 72 1 744 869, is to be used in these vehicles. It can be identified by the PN on the paper element as well as the presence of a fleece mat.

After repairs, perform a thorough test drive while monitoring the mixture adaptation values.

Only once the values are back in the nominal range and the engine is operating properly again should the faults be cleared.
