Replacing Front Axle Support

Caution: After installation:
Adjust front axle.
Reinstall reinforcement plate.
Driving without reinforcement plate is not permitted!
Check distance between engine carrier and stem of double joint.

Recycling:
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.
Draw power steering fluid out of tank - do not reuse fluid.

Note:
Make sure all parts are absolutely clean.
No dirt is allowed to enter the system. Seal off pipe connections with plugs.

Installation:
Bleed power steering.

Remove front wheels.
Remove reinforcement plate.
Remove engine splash guard.
Raise engine with special tool 00 0 200, described in Removing oil sump/front axle differential.





Remove lower clamping screw on clamp.
Set steering gear to straight-ahead position - markings on steering spindle and steering gear must be aligned.
Remove ignition key in this position.
The steering wheel cannot be turned any more and the slip ring in the steering column switch is not damaged.
Detach clamp from steering gear.

Installation:
Set steering gear to straight-ahead position - markings on steering spindle and steering gear must be aligned.
Tightening torque:
- Universal joint/coupling to steering gear/steering spindle
- Steel Joint
- M8 10.9 24 Nm
- Aluminum Joint
- M8 10.9 28 Nm
Note: Replace Clamping Screw





Unfasten nut.
Force off steering tie rod on left and right with special tool 32 3 090.

Installation:
Tapered spigot and bore both free of grease.
Replace self-locking nut.
Brace on hexagon socket if necessary.
Tightening torque:
- Tie rod end nut: 80 Nm
Important! Tie rod end with split-pin hole must not be bolted with a self locking nut.





Release nut and remove left and right control arms from front axle support.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening torque:
- Control arm to front axle support:
- Jointing Torque: 100 Nm
- Torque Angle: 90 ° ± 15 °
Replace screw/nut
Tighten in empty weight on normal position





Release nut and remove left and right tension struts from front axle support.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening torque:
- Tension strut to front axle support: 165 Nm
Replace screw
Tighten in empty weight on normal position.

Unscrew left and right engine mounts from front axle support.

M57: Additionally on left side, release nut on engine mount/engine support arm from above.





Unfasten screws.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening torque:
- Steering gear to front axle carrier
- M12 10.9 100 Nm





Brace front axle support with workshop hoist. Unfasten screws.

Installation:
Tightening torque:
- Front axle carrier to engine carrier
- M12 10.9 100 Nm
Note: Replace Screws.

Damaged threads in engine carrier.





Lower workshop hoist until banjo bolts on steering gear are accessible.
Release banjo bolts.
Remove front axle support with steering gear.

Installation:
Replace sealing rings (D).
Tightening torque:
- Hydraulic line connections to vane pump and steering gear
- M10 Banjo bolt 12 Nm
- M14 Banjo bolt 35 Nm
- M16 Banjo bolt 40 Nm
- M18 Banjo bolt 45 Nm
- Cap screw 36 Nm
