Tie Rod: Service and Repair


Replacing left or right tie rod

Caution:
Adjust front axle after assembly.





Remove front wheel.
If necessary, remove engine underguard at side.
Unfasten nut.
Detach tie rod with special tool 32 3 090.

Installation:
Remove grease from pin and bore.
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque:
- Hex screw on bearing block for adjustment of steering wheel
- Self locking nut 3.0 Nm
Note: Adjustment lever in clamped position.





Release ear clip and detach gaiter from steering gear.

Caution:
To avoid damage to rack and to suspension mounting, move rack in as far as possible.

Use special tool 32 3 160 to screw tie rod off rack.

Installation:
Tightening torque:
- Mounting block for steering wheel adjustment to carrier of instrument panel
- M8 22 Nm






Note:
Determine measurement (A) on old tie rod and adjust new tie rod to this measurement - this makes wheel alignment easier.

Pay attention to clamping ring (1) with nut.
Install new gaiter.
