Removing and Installing/Replacing Shift Tower (Steptronic)

25 16 056 Removing and installing/replacing shift tower (Steptronic)

Important! Do not disassemble new Steptronic gearshift bracket.





Note: Identifying features of new Steptronic shift tower:
1 = Position, solenoid valve
2= Black plastic section
3= Aluminum section

Note: Move selector lever to parking position "P".
Remove transmission underbody protection if necessary.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
^ Remove storage compartment.

Note: Do not remove oddments tray in E38.

Installation:
The lines must be correctly clipped into the retaining clips so as to prevent damage (trapping of lines).





Grip clamping sleeve (1) and slacken nut (2).

Installation:
Adjust selector lever
Grip cable (1) at hexagon head (2).
Unscrew nut (3).
Pull cable (1) out of holder.

Installation:
1AZ Bowden cable on shift tower/transmision All 15 Nm








Note: 6HP26Z transmission only!
Lever out retainer (3) downwards using a screwdriver.





Release screw (1) on interlock cable.
Tightening torque: 7 Nm.
Pull plug connector (2) out of bracket and disconnect.





Disconnect plug connector (1).
Release screws and lift out shift tower (2) a little.
3AZ Shift console to tunnel 7 Nm
Unhook interlock cable.
Remove shift bracket with cable.

Installation:
Check interlock shift lock function and if necessary adjust.





Installation E53:
Insert rubber seal (1) of shift cable (2) in transmission tunnel (3).

Installation:
Secure leads using cable ties.
