Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair
Removing and installing left or right output shaft
Note:
After completing work, check front axle differential fluid level.
Caution:
Use only the approved gear oil in this front axle differential.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the differential!
Always replace radial seal on output shaft This task is described in "Replacing left/right output shaft radial seal", refer to Gaskets and Seals, Differential, Service and Repair.
Caution:
"Removing and installing reinforcement plate" contains important installation instructions, refer to Steering and Suspension, Suspension, see Cross-Member, Service and Repair.
Remove reinforcement plate.
Remove engine underguard at front.
Note:
There is no need to perform a front axle alignment check.
Therefore only remove/install following components:
- Remove front wheel.
- Remove ABS pulse generator.
- Remove brake caliper and tie back.
- Force steering tie rod off swivel bearing.
- Remove tension strut with guide joint from swivel bearing.
- Remove control arm from swivel bearing.
- Release collar nut on output shaft and press output shaft out of drive flange.
- Tilt swivel bearing to one side.
Press output shaft with special tool 31 5 110 out of front axle differential and remove.
Installation:
Push in output shaft over resistance of retaining ring.
Output shaft coupling must snap audibly into place.
Caution:
Replace retaining ring on output shaft.
