Removing And Installing Rear Window
CAUTION: The "Window cementing instructions" serve as the basis for this repair instruction and must be observed without fail.
Remove rear spoiler lower section.
Remove rear window wiper motor.
Detach plug connection on both suppressor filters.
CAUTION:
When reusing the rear window:
Avoid damaging lines for rear window heating/antenna.
Secure hose (1) and cable (2) to roof with adhesive tape.
Open rear lid upper section (4).
Slide protective cover (3) between rear window frame and body and secure with adhesive tape.
Place a support (e.g. special tool 00 9 312) between rear lid upper section (4) and rear lid lower section and secure with adhesive tape.
Attach fabric adhesive tape (2) at bottom between rear window and rear window frame.
The rear window is cut out with two different lengths of blade (risk of damage).
(A) Blade length 24 mm at top
(B) Blade length 36 mm at side
(C) Blade length 24 mm at bottom
NOTE: First, cuts are made at top (A) and bottom (C).
Fit knife (24 mm blade length, sourcing reference: BMW Parts Service) to the tool.
NOTE: Prior to each use, regrind the blade with a grinding stone while the machine is running (new blades also).
Releasing Velcro-type fasteners (1):
Mount special tool 51 3 010 on rear window (as far outside as possible) (moisten suction surfaces).
Releasing left/right Velcro-type fasteners (1):
Carefully insert special tool 00 9 318 between rear window and rear window frame but do not press into center of rear window (this would break the window).
Press special tool 00 9 318 downwards (against rear window frame) and pull rear window upwards with special tool 51 3 010.
Overview of rear window bonding (E53):
Attach special tool 51 3 010 to tool trolley twice. Moisten suction surfaces and secure rear window from outside. When reusing old rear window, remove residual adhesive down to 0.5 mm and replace upper dual-lock tapes.
The almost vertical part (B) of the adhesive bead (1) must face the window edge.
Spread adhesive bead (4) with special tool 00 9 322.
Installation:
Distance from bottom of rear window to rear window frame is 4 mm.
Install rear window with special tool 51 3 010, center at sides and snap into place in Velcro-type tapes (dual-lock tape) at corners (1).
