Campaign - DME Update for OBD Communication
SI B12 17 08Engine Electrical Systems
June 2008
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL
AFFECTED VEHICLES PRIOR TO CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Service Action: E65 and E66 with N62, N62TU, or N73 OBD Communication
MODEL
E65, E66 with N62TU produced from 9/07 to 3/08
E66 with N73 produced from 9/07 to 3/08
E65 (Alpina B7) with N62 produced from 9/07 up to 3/08
SITUATION
The OBD relevant transmission defect fault is stored in the DME control module instead of in the EGS transmission module. Consequently, no OBD communication with a scan tool is possible.
This will not cause any drivability issues.
In order to correct this situation, BMW is conducting a Service Action to reprogram the DME control module on all effected vehicles. With the completion of this Service Action, the software of the complete vehicle will be updated as described in SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization,
Programming), Procedure B.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 750i and 750iL vehicles with N62TU engines; 760iL vehicles with N73 engines; and BMW Alpina B7 vehicles with N62 engines produced from 9/07 up to 3/08.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The chassis number ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
PROCEDURE
Reprogram and recode the complete vehicle using Progman V30.01.01 or higher (target integration level of E065-08-03-510 or higher).
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 517. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-335) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 517 (2), printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty or BMW Emissions Warranty.
Note:
In the case where Progman requires the replacement of control modules or additional programming because certain control modules failed to program correctly, print out the Measures Plan and Status Report/Final Report as described in the Progman programming procedure (B09 05 01), and attach these reports to the RO in the vehicle file. This additional work should use Defect Code 00 12 61 02 00 along with a Labor Operation and Labor Allowance selected from KSD.
