INFORMATION
A new feature has been added to the Navigation System of the above-mentioned models which provides up to date traffic information to the driver. This enhanced feature is called RTTI (Real Time Traffic Information)
Please refer to the attached FAQ, which provides valuable information for the center personnel to help deal with customer questions that may arise. Please share this information with all service personnel including the Service Advisor.
RTTI is still a developing service that requires information from different sources in order for the traffic info to be available to the driver. Customer complaints on the accuracy and timing of traffic info can by no means be considered a defect of the vehicle.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
For information only
1. What is RTTI?
RTTI is Real Time Traffic Information that is encoded and broadcast via FM radio stations in 43 metropolitan areas and updated every few minutes. The RTTI system operates 24/7. A separate tuner in certain 2007 model year vehicles makes it possible to receive this information without actually listening to a specific station, even if the radio is turned off. The data is then transferred to the navigation system, which calculates the best route based on the available traffic information.
2. Which models are able to receive RTTI?
ALL 2007 model year 3 Series, 5 Series and 6 Series vehicles equipped with Navigation System (SA 609) starting from September 2006 production (except 3 Series Coupe from SOP). In the future the new X5 with Navigation System will also have this feature.
3. Are there any limitations to RTTI?
RTTI is currently not available on vehicles equipped with High Definition (HD) radio (SA 653) because RTTI uses the second antenna.
4. What are some of the benefits to the customer?
- The customer does not have to listen to or wait until traffic reports are broadcast in order to get the latest traffic information. With RTTI the information is updated automatically in the background.
- he customer is able to reach their destination on time, by avoiding traffic delays. The system provides timely traffic information to the driver.
- RTTI is a value added service to the navigation system, which in the past was only used for directions.
- No activation or monthly subscription fees are required.
- No additional hardware is required to be installed on the vehicle in order for RTTI to function.
5. Is a special map disc needed in order for RTTI to work properly?
RTTI will only function properly with map disc version "2007.1" or later. The part number for this map version is 65 90 0 415 622.
6. Which metropolitan markets are RTTI available in?
7. Is it possible to retrofit RTTI in older model year vehicles?
No, currently it is not possible.
8. Initially does RTTI need to be enabled?
Yes, this is done my pressing down on the controller and accessing the 5th menu. Select "Settings". Scroll down and highlight and select "Traffic Info".
Once in the traffic info screen, select "Traffic Info". Note: it may take up to a minute before the system is enabled.
If this menu selection is not present then the vehicle is not equipped with RTTI (SA 6UH).
Once enabled the check box is marked and the available radio stations are listed
Some radio stations may appear as "LOCAL". This is caused by the radio station sending data that would cause strange letter combinations. This is not an error of the BMW radio or navigation system.
When "AUTO" is selected the system automatically selects the station with the strongest received signal.
9. How does the customer know if RTTI is operating in the area they are driving in?
"TI+" will be displayed in the bottom status bar of the CID when RTTI is functioning.
If TI+ is not displayed it could be because of one of the following reasons:
- The vehicle is outside of the traffic station reception area.
- RTTI has not been enabled.
- The vehicle does not have RTTI (SA 6UH).
10. How do I access RTTI?
There are 3 ways in which RTTI can be used to display traffic information.
A. When Route guidance is selected and the customer has selected the option of "Dynamic route" from the route criteria list. The navigation system automatically calculates the fastest route through traffic based on the available traffic data.
B. When route guidance is selected and "Dynamic route" is not selected from the route criteria list, the navigation system informs the driver (via a pop-up box and audible warning, if audible prompts are active) of a traffic incident on the route and offers a detour. The customer has the option of selecting this detour.
C. Without route guidance or Dynamic route active, the customer has the option of selecting "Traffic info" from within the navigation menu. A list of received traffic incidents is displayed, sorted by distance from the current vehicle location. The customer can also display the map with the various traffic icons.
11. What is the meaning of the arrows and icons that appear on the navigation map and traffic incident detail?
- Icons that appear on a white background are not on the planned route.
- Icons that appear on a yellow background are on the planned route.
- The small black arrows located on roads indicate the speed of moving traffic
Please see the listing of icons below and their explanations.
12. Why are the traffic icons sometimes blank or not displayed?
- The traffic information icons are shown in the map view up to a scale of 100 miles/200 km.
- Blank icons mean that there are several traffic events within the same area. Switch to a smaller map scale to show more detail.
